I need to buy a new vacume cleaner,
Needs to be capable of cleaning a standard 3 bedroom house (no pets) and also good for the car and my 3 month servicing of the pc's (small nozzle / brush)
All advice greatly appreciated.

Hi mate I am not an expert and this is just my own personal opinion.
The best (and the worst) Vacuum Cleaners you can get today in my opinion are...
The Best Vacuum Cleaners
Top three
1 Sebo (German superiority and quality, I believe pr. See bow, c-Bow - Superb light weight uprights and cylindricals Regarded highly in Which consumer reports. Many satisfied customers and reports on the internet! Easily the number one rated vacs! 5 years parts and labour guarantee!) I am unable to type in links for some reason as MSE blocks links in my posts but its Sebo dot co dot uk.
2 Miele (German I believe pr. Meee le though I'm not German so can't be sure) - New Uprights are heavier than most but come out high in Which reports and designed and tested to last 20 years! If your Dyson isn't in landfill within an eigth of that time you'll be lucky! Their cylindricals are excellent! A lot of their vacs have lights so you can see dirt ahead of you! Consistently top marks in Which reports!) Their site is miele dot co dot uk.
3 Oreck (American - World Famous American vacs used by many businesses and industry. I believe they are the lightest upright Vacuum Cleaners in the world unless they have been overtaken by someone else. I think their vacs also have lights which is useful. No hose facility though you do get seperate small vac which may be good for what you need! 3, 5 and 7 year warranties depending on model! Low Wattage!) Their site is oreck dot co dot uk.
Runners up
4) Bosch (German reliability - Make quality cylindrical Vacs!) Their site is boschappliances dot co dot uk.
5) Nilfisk (Danish Company making commercial and consumer cleaners and vacs Cylindrical no uprights!) Their site is nilfish dot co dot uk.
Alternatives to consider!
iRobot "Roomba" (American/British - Robotic vacuum cleaner! Great for everything except the stairs, you can set and forget. Has a sensor to prevent it falling down stairs! Some models returns to base to recharge. American company, technology comes from British bomb disposal robots used to prevent IRA bombs!) Their site is irobot dot com forward slash uk forward slash.
Henry (British - Some claim not so great at picking up dirt - used a lot commercially in the UK though so they can't be that bad!) Their site is henryvacs dot co dot uk
Not so good Vacuum Cleaners / Could do better - Pergatory
Dyson (British - These are actually Great vacs until something goes wrong with them! When it does they are complex to repair and more often than not usually completely and utterly unrepairable and have to be thrown! Dyson Vacs are also Very heavy and they have poor customer service. The actually prodcut itself is great with the exception of the weight of it. But when some goes wrong with it you're usually stuffed and don't expect any help from Dyson once they have already sold the product and taken your hard earned cash. If they could improve drastically these few major flaws such as poor customer service, heavy products and aftersales repairs, replacements and parts they could easily move out of this category)
The Worst Vacuum Cleaners - Buy at your own risk!
Electrolux (AEG-Electrolux-Zanussi-Tricity Bendix) (Swedish - Notoriously dreadful vacuum makers! Avoid like the plague! The worst vacuum cleaners in the world. You just have to search the internet for the bad reports - The Swedes should stick to making wardrobes!)

The above opinions are my own and not those of MSE and is based on research I did myself from 2009 onwards which may also include the views of many other people who own or have owned the above products.
Hope this helps.

Ps. You can buy really small battery powered devices for keyboards. On servicing PC's though, if you're opening them up I'd be really careful and have an anti-static wrist strap. I also wouldn't use a vacuum I'd use compressed air instead if you need to clean out any dust or a hair dryer on low setting using cool shot (i.e. no heat).0 -
Think this has half already been covered here
Just about to put my new Bosch through it's paces...(reduced/cheapest price at John Lewis' and a which best buy) -> http://www.johnlewis.com/231070837/Product.aspx which is a saving of over £100 on the amazon price...very heavy though....Depends how urgently you need it...might be wise to get it delivered

I use a bissell bagless lift off http://www.bisselldirect.co.uk/product/26
and find it a good all round cleaner.
Thats the first i have heard of bissell's damaging carpets:eek: i dont know if it is specific models doing it but mine has been fine.
With so many makes and models of cleaners on the market it is not an easy choice.0 -
We have been using an Oreck for over 10yrs, brilliant vacuum, never let us down yet. I managed to persuade my daughter to buy one last year, she is over the moon with it. She also got the smail hand held vacuum with hers included in the price.

Well the snooze is I've tested the Bosch and it has suction so powerful it could pull ya brains out of their lug oles...
Beasties be gone ......
Hair be gone too (I have no pets but a lot of hair and it gets everywhere - in clumps)
and that was only on no 3 - on no. 5 it sucks up the carpet ...
Anyone need their carpet pulling up for new year? I have the perfect tool...wonder if it also takes wall paper off ...complete bargain for £149...
Only one minor snag with it (which took me 15 mins min to fix) was putting the bin on (I had to push it in the end after I'd almost bashed it broke :eek) but that's okay now....even the hose is easy to dismantle.. yet secure (clip on things) and the nozzle thing at the end is flat so reaches right under the sofa ... It's a minor point about the bin
Here endeth my MSE review of the white one on the Bosch GS-60 Power Range....(vacuums)
Not bad for a cylinder......really?
In fact so glad I didn't waste £80 on lesser uprights (think electrolux...)

Thanks everyone for all your advice0

My Miele is at least 15 years old, possibly even 17 and still sucks like new:) Only ever had to change the bags and filters on it.0

I had a Miele Cat and Dog. It gave up the ghost after five years and Miele customer services weren't interested (apart from trying to sell me a new vacuum cleaner). I now have a Henry Turbo which in my opinion, is better than the Miele (it's the turbo head that makes the difference).0

Thanks - we've got one of these arriving today from John Lewis. A bargain at £149, wasn't it?
Your reviews are impressive. We've had Dysons for years, but I'm really fed up with the appalling noise they make, and if these are up to Bosch's normal standards they'll be reliable too - unlike Dyson, which are cheap-looking and plasticky.
No ongoing maintenance costs, either (filters etc) - we took back a Panasonic bagless recently after discovering that it was going to cost around £40 a year in filters!
Being told by Panasonic that "the MC-UL594 is a premium product, which is also reflected in the accessories and spare parts" didn't impress! I now see Panasonic as a rip-off brand.0 -
Had a long discussion on this some time ago..here
Seems Sebo and Miele were the best, although the most expensive.
I use a Dyson DC01, and Henry. But I tend the keep on refurbishing them from bits i salvage from ones people throw away. Neither are brilliant but I am too tight to pay £200 for a Miele!!!!! You can see the thread was started in 2007 and I still have the same Vacuum cleanersNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0
