I am debt free today

Today I paid the balance on my debt and am fully debt free (still have the mortgage but that’s ok). It has taken me 8 years to clear my debts (credit card, store cards, loans, etc…). I was brought up by parents who had a casual attitude to debts, seeing how they approached their debts made me think that it’s perfectly normal to live that way.

When I got my first job I took out a small loan then moved on to overdrafts, credit cards and the lot. A few years ago I became very unhappy with my job so I decided to change it: a bad move which later proved the best thing that could happen to me financially. The new job was low pay and I quickly realized that I could not afford my repayments on such a low wage so I had a light bulb moment and decided to tackle my debts. Not long after that I quit that job and started temp jobs.
I spoke to CCS and got in touch with all my creditors, I started paying a bit to everyone then I became unemployed for a short while. After this I found bits of job here and there and continued paying my debts. I totally forgot about one loan I had and the next thing you know I had a CCJ against me together with a charging order on my house. I was stunned, depressed and suicidal when I realized how much trouble I put myself in.

When I began to deal with my debts I stopped occurring new ones to this day I have not contracted a new debt. It has taken me eight long years which felt like prison and I was so overwhelmed by the sheer amount to repay.
I have gone without so many things but it was worth it because unlike my parents I couldn’t cope psychologically. The debt recovery people said they will send me the paperwork for me pass to the county court so that the CCJ can be marked as ‘satisfied’ on my credit record and the charging order against my house removed.

Today I paid the last installment and I am debt free after eight long years of repayments. It hasn't sunk in yet because one day doesn't right eight years of having your income going to creditors but I hope i will enjoy life again someday.

  • I have learnt a lot from this website and everyone adding their inputs/sharing experiences taught me a lot as well. For exemple, I didn't know about basic accounts - that information came from this site. Even the budget spreadsheet I learnt from here.
I now have two basic accounts and two prepaid cards.
