Cancellation of gym membership after price increase

Hi there. My girlfriend has just opened a letter from her local Bannatynes Gym and unfortunately it wasn't a belated christmas card. Instead it was a letter saying that her monthly payment will be increased beginning January.

She hasn't used the gym for months, and is well out of her 12 month contract. How easy will it be for her to cancel the membership, and will she be subjected to the dreaded 3 month notice period that is used.

Also, does anyone know the best way to go into a gym and cancel a membership, or is it best to send a letter via recorded post?

Kind regards for everyone's wonderful help.

I just made up some dispute with Bannatynes when I wanted to cancel them (it was actually a genuine dispute, they'd given me 4 day passes then refused to honor them because they weren't allowed as some new Head Office rule had said).

So I said I wanted it cancelled with 1 month notice (I was inside the 12 months) and I would stand outside their gym and tell everyone who walked in that they lie to get customers.

After about four letters (all cced to head office), they cancelled instantly.

Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?
  • Thank-you. I really would rather not stand outside the gym though hurling abuse at passers by. I guess we will just take a trip down on Tuesday and see what they have to say.

Just wanted to try and get a feel of what curve balls they might try and throw at us.

Exactly! Which is why I was wondering if there was a way to "get out" as they have put the price up.

    Any suggestions?
