Confused with christmas & new year working hours!

Hey Guys.
I am really confused what hours i am meant to work over christmas and new year.
I work 5.5 days a week mon-sat (half day)
I work 8hrs mon- fri
4 hours on sat
I work in a cash & carry. so thet are closed 25,26 and 1st.
So on christmas eve & new years eve i only work 6hrs (but paid for 8, as the shop closed early)
This is what I have worked so far, and my employer tells me I owe the company 1 day?
24th Dec - 6hrs (paid for 8hrs)
25th - Closed (normally work 4hrs)
26th - Closed - Day off
27th - Day in Lieu of 26th
28th - not worked - as no deliveries to do on this day.
29th - normal 8 hrs
30th - normal 8hrs
31st - 6hrs (paid for 8hrs)
1st - closed (normally work 4hrs)
2nd -Day off
3rd - have been told to work full day 8hrs, as I have the 28th off?
Do I owe any more days/hrs?
Our department choose to have Tues 28th off, as there was no deliveries, but do I have to make the time up on the first week in Jan?
Any insight would be great.
Another colleague works the same 5.5 days (sun 4hrs instead of sat) so i assume this will be the same outcome?
P.S. in the the staff handbook/contract it states 'may be required to work certain bank holidays at the request if your line man manager'
My boss is a failry easy going generous guy, and dont really want to make too much fuss, that it will impact on me & the department.
Thanks on advance

How much annual leave do you get each year? As a minimum you should receive 5.6 weeks, which may include bank holidays, any more is a bonus. Do you have to 'book' bank holidays from your annual leave? If you work them do you get paid or paid extra?MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j0

Hi
I get 27 days Annual leave and bank holidays.
I dont have book off bank holidays as working them is at the request if the manager which I recieve a day in lieu for working them and time and a half pay.
I understand that I will get paid full day for the sat 25th, and normal pay for the 27-28th I had off (if I did work them I would get 2 days in lieu and 1.5 pay) and same with the 1st (full pay) but will get 1.5 pay for the 3rd.
Thanks0 -
Hi there
Forget the pay, as it's not relevant to days worked, and forget what days you worked for a moment. Quite simply, you are entitled to 35 days off a year, plus 52 Sundays and 52 half-Saturdays - this is your contractual allowance. What you have to work out over the whole Annual Leave year (Jan to Dec?) is whether or not you have had these.
2010 is complicated by the fact that Xmas Day and Boxing Day are *not* Bank Holidays. This is my reading of your situation:
F 24th Dec - 6hrs (paid for 8hrs) - NORMAL
Sa 25th - Closed (normally work 4hrs) - YOU EITHER OWE 4 HOURS (PAID), OR COMPANY GIVES THIS DAY ADDITIONALLY (UNPAID)
Su 26th - Closed - Day off - NORMAL
M 27th - Day in Lieu of 26th - BANK HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT, SO NORMAL
Tu 28th - not worked - as no deliveries to do on this day - BANK HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT, SO NORMAL
W 29th - normal 8 hrs - NORMAL
Th 30th - normal 8hrs - NORMAL
F 31st - 6hrs (paid for 8hrs) - NORMAL
Sa 1st - closed (normally work 4hrs) - YOU EITHER OWE 4 HOURS (PAID), OR COMPANY GIVES THIS DAY ADDITIONALLY (UNPAID)
Su 2nd -Day off - NORMAL
So it's complicated by the fact that the company chose to close the business on non-Bank Holidays (Sat 25 and Sat 1). If you're *not* being paid, then I would see it as an unpaid day off which the company has allowed. If you *are* being paid, then you need to take it as Annual Leave or work the extra time to make it up.
So you need to:
1 - Check through your whole leave year (Jan to Dec?) to check that you have had your 27, plus 8, plus all your Suns and half days on Saturday, and it sounds like you have
2 - Check if you're being paid for Sat 25th and Sat 1st
3 - If you're being paid, you owe 8 hours, absolutely
4 - If you're not being paid, you need to talk to your manager about whether Sat 25th and Sat 1st are days off given by the company for free - they should be
ETA - just seen that you're being paid for Sat 25th (and Sat 1st?). In this case, yes, I agree that you owe a day to the company. You could potentially dispute that they chose to close the business on those Saturdays - but then I bet you probably wouldn't wanted to have worked them, either! So as they're paying you even though you weren't there on those days, I agree you owe the time back.
I hope that helps and doesn't confuse you any more!
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
I was getting confused and trying to work out if a day is owed but looking at how kiki works it out i understand that a day is owed0
