David Lloyd - can I get some money back?

Hi I wonder if anyone has any advice...
I've been a member at a David Lloyd club for over 10 years. I have been unwell for the last two years - I was able to get to work, but other than that wasn't really able to bring myself to do anything except sit at home. This meant that I must have walked into the gym three or four times in the last 24 months...
I am getting better now and am planning to cancel my membership. During the past 2 years no-one from the club bothered to contact me to see why I wasn't going (I know, I know, they're a business so just want the dosh!). If someone had contacted me, encouraged me to go etc I might have done so...
Do you think it's worth even attempting to persuade DL to give me back some of the money they've taken over the last two years? I accept I didn't go, but I wasn't well enough to...
Any thoughts / advice?

I'm glad to hear you're getting better now Katie, but I really don't think you should waste any energy trying to get DL to refund any money. I can understand that you weren't well enough to use the gym, but if you were well enough to go to work and well enough to visit the gym a few times were you not well enough to cancel your membership if it was of no use to you? I don't see that DL have done anything wrong.
I think your energy would be better used getting yourself well again. And making use of your gym membership might help your recovery.0 -
katie I am guessing you are in cardiff?? David Lloyd is damn expensive IMO. If you were looking to exercise now following on from philc above there are some excellent alternatives around the city gym and non gym based. You wouldnt be able to get anything back from DL in my opinion as they do not have an obligation to MAKE you go. Thats your responsibility. I would suggest putting that behind you and moving forward positively. There are many more sociable gyms. Personally I am at fitness first which I love. Not the best for facilities but I find the staff great and get on well with them. Its also over half the price of DL! Other options are bannatynes and DW sports that are I am told really good too. Outside that that there are really social activities such as military fitness and similar things. Many happen a few times a week at roath park. PM me if you like I can try and get the details for some things for you as a number of my friends do these and use the other gyms.0

Just to say I'm not in Cardiff, but in South East England - just from Wales originally! Thanks everyone for advice...0 -
David Lloyd stick to the cancellation policy no matter what. Do as I, and quite a few friends/colleagues have done - put in your notice and put the months of payment behind you at least once the notice has expired you will not be paying anymore! Get some good walking boots and go a walking with your local Ramblers Group as previously suggested. You can google Ramblers and find your local groups programme on the site. You are not restricted to just your local group you can hook up with any that you fancy. My friend and I always seem to walk with a group in Hertfordshire and we live in North London, its surprising how far you can go in a short space of time on a Sunday morning up a motorway. Can I also just say you are always made welcome - its amazing how far you can walk and chat passing some great scenery on the way.SallyD0
