I had mine done in 1993 when it was quite experimental and they would only do one eye at a time, plus it was quite painful, having said that it was the best thing I ever did. I used to have -6 and an astigmatism in my left eye now Ihave 20:20 vision even n my late 40's.

My brother had his done last year, he said he wishes he had done it sooner.

Thank you to everyone for responding to this.

I will show my OH this thread tonight. I personally am concerned that people have this procedure done and then a few years later need to have it done again but at the end of the day it is her decision.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

I had this done...oh about 2.5 years ago now. At optimax in Belfast, but they're a chain I think?
I was very short sighted and have astigmatism, was about -4.5 in one eye and -4.25 in the other, and have worn both glasses and contacts.

I have to say I wish I'd done it sooner, and it's been amazing for me. Being able to wake up first thing in the morning and see clearly is amazing. I got perfect vision the first time round but I think this can depend on your prescription. However they went through everything with me first and I knew what vision I would get pretty much.

I don't have a problem with night vision as such, but at dusk some light can look a little hazy. What I would say is bright lights cause me more issue now than before. The sun seems brighter to me now and I have to wear sunglasses driving in direct sunlight where before I could have got away without them. But this isn't a big deal, and the pros definitely outweigh this one con :)

I had a patient who had this done and she is now registered blind. Be very careful and get recommendations from people you know before parting with your cash. Always talk through your treatment options and do some research. Some clinics will give you statistics of how sucessful they have been with people with a similar prescription to you as well which can help with the hard decisions.

I had it done about 10 years ago. Driving home afterwards was like a whole new world - my vision improved with every mile travelled - it was that quick. Whoops, should say here that I wasn't the driver! My eyesight was totally perfect for about 8 years but have recently noticed that I'm starting to struggle a little for close work (nothing to do with the eye surgery, but alas age related). I don't regret having my eyes done one litle bit, in my case it was money well spent. Also, I never had any problems with night driving, light sensitivity etc.
  • Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. You absolutely must get it done. the best money I ever spent and my only regret is that I did'nt do it years and years sooner. 20/20 vision the following day and I've never looked back. You simply must do it. you'll be completely delighted with the results :)

The two opposite ends of the spectrum - no wonder a decision is difficult to make !!

I'm surprised nobody has asked you what your OH's prescription it is. The more complex your prescription, the riskier the surgery is as far as I'm aware. I am over -10 in both eyes and would not risk having it done (not to mention the fact that it is a lot pricier if you have eyesight as bad as mine).

I mentioned to someone at the eye infirmary about light sensitivity and was told that some people have it; but otherwise have healthy eyes.

I've not had laser eye surgery done and don't plan to. The thought of a laser going into my eyes scares me. (I don't even like the idea of putting contacts in)
