in Cutting tax
Hi all,
Last winter I temporarily worked in a factory near my parents home for two months whilst I was finding it hard to get a job in the city I live in. I worked there October and November. I earnt £2,459.70 across the two months I worked there. I was taxed £292.40 but everyone I spoke to insisted I would get this tax back at some point.
After I left the factory job I started working part-time in a bar and don't generally earn enough to get taxed, or if I do its taken off my weekly wage.
I've just realized I never got any of the tax back from the factory job. So my question is, can I? That amount of money would be extremely handy right now so if its possible I'd like to try an reclaim it.
I've updated my details on the HRMC website to make sure they have my current address. What action should I take next?
Thank you, Fay.:A

What did you do with the P45? And what were your total earnings to Apr 10 ...... inc any JSA?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

I have the p45 here in front of me. I am unsure of total earnings up to April 10 but I know it isn't very much as I was a student up until August, Earnt around £800 September-October then came the £2,459 from the factory job through October-November then I started my bar job for which I earn around £400 a month so from November- April that would be around £2000.
So I'd say my total earnings to April 10 were around £5000 maybe even less. I never claimed JSA.0 -
Is that your copy of the P45 ..... and does it have a tax code of 647L? And did you pass a copy onto the bar ..... who should have refunded anything due at that point. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Yes, its my copy. I didn't pass anything on to the bar as when I started working there we were paid cash in hand.0

In which case ..... contact the HMRC office mentioned on the P45 and ask they process a refund. If they ask you write in - send the P45 but copy it first.
If your summary of earnings is close to accurate - you should get any tax refunded you paid in 09/10. But expect to wait a couple of months if asked to write. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Ok. I will do that. Thank you very much for your help.0

You're welcome .... we got there in the end.
Best of luck with the refund ........ their new PAYE system should hopefully make it a little quicker as it consolidates all your employments in the one record.
