Windows 7 French to English

I have just bought a new Pc and it has arrived with Windows 7 home Premium 64 bit operating system in FRENCH
- my first thought was to return it,but I received it at a real bargain price so I was wondering if any body can advise me the cheapest way to change it to a Windows 7 English version.

looks like you need to either upgrade to windows 7 ultimate and use the multi language interface, or you can buy an english copy of windows 7 and install it on the laptop over the french one.

this may help you partly http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-the-display-language

Can't look up the specifics for windows 7 till I get home but under other windows versions you needed to look under Control Panel > Regional and Language settings change it to to English (United Kingdom) profile.

I'd be very very very suprised if you need to do this second bit but on the offchance you got a genuine french version with the UK profile removed you might need to run windows update (look under the optional ones) to get it as an additional language pack.... UK is usuallly included as standard tho and you often only have to do that for obscure languages with funny characters like Gerogian, Hebrew, Korean etc etc

EDIT:ahh yes, didn;t realise they'd locked that down for non pro/ultimate editions.... as a side thought if yoou're able to 'uninstall' the french pack will it default to the english one? and/or are you able to reinstall Windows7 using a factory restore or UK version of the windows install disks with your existing keys?
don;t think windows keys were ever language locked in the old days but couldn;t say for certain now (you'd still need to match OEM vs RETAIL install media)

as jayme correctly stated, you will need to upgrade the OS from Home Premium /// as the OS (instructions) itself is French/

  • Thanks for all your thoughts - Reinstalling using an English copy of Windows and using the French key is certainly worth a try - failing that I think I will go for the Windows Ultimate upgrade. My son is at Primary School so I will try to obtain one from a Student supplier website.
