in Cutting tax
I've done my SA for 2009-10 and am due a refund.
I've heard that HMRC are in a bit of a disorganised pickle at the moment, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me approximately how long it will be before I get the money?
Also, I'm led to believe that I can reclaim some tax on interest on savings. I did not work, (nor was I claiming benefits, before anyone starts) in 2005-6 and 2006-7 and. I paid about £450 each year in tax according to my bank statement. Is this true that I may be eligible for a refund, can I claim back that far?

If you put your bank account details on the return then any refund should be credited to your account pretty quickly after it is processed. If you did it online it should be even quicker. If you didn't put your account details on the return then you may have to call them up and ask for it.
If you completed tax returns in those earlier years then your should have entered your investment income on those tax returns. If you didn't then you need to complete and R40 - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r40.pdf
for each of the relevant tax years. Once submitted it should take about 10 weeks for them to be actioned and any refund issued. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I did R40s this year and last year and was pleasantly surprised to get my refunds within 2 weeks, but at this busy time of year for HMRC I would agree that it could take several weeks.0

Yes it was filed online and I sent my bank details. It will be nice if I get the money back before the end of Jan, will help with my horrendous heating bill for the last month
The two years when I wasn't working, they didn't ask for tax returns so I've printed off the R40.
Thank you for the replies.0 -
You're still in time to claim for both years if they were considered to be PAYE. But you're out of time for 05/06 if under SA :-

(scroll down to next para for SA criteria)If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

Oh flip....
Not sure how they'd interpret it. I was PAYE for 23 years until 2005. I left paid employment then to pursue other activities. I only became self employed in 2008.
I have a feeling they'll wangle it in their favour....:mad:0 -
No interpretation needed - you were clearly PAYE for the period in question. I only gave the alternatives as your 2nd post suggested SA Returns had been made prior the two years not working? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Yes I can see now where I wasn't clear. I was always PAYE until I became self employed in 2008. I had never filled in any tax returns until then. I was somewhat surprised though that HMRC didn't contact me to ask me to complete a return for either of the two years when I wasn't in paid work. I'd always assumed that it was the norm for them to do so, especially as I wasn't claiming benefits either.
Anyway, it sounds like positive news, I'll get the R40 filled in for each tax year and see what happens.0
