Don't try and tell me sales are good for getting out of debt

I see from the TV that thousands (perhaps millions) of people have been spending huge amounts at the sales.
I hope non of those people are in serious debt. If they are they surely can not justify spending money in the sales, or can they?
In my opinion anyone in serious debt should not be out at the sales if the can not control their spending.
Am I wrong?
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Generally I think you are right but I have read on here that some people have bought presents, cards etc for 2011 so that is 'sensible' sale spending :)

Nobody 'needs' Gucci - however much it's reduced - but I really 'want' it! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Yes, the paper/cards thing is ok, but not huge amounts of handbags and clothes when you've got loads of debt, i personally couldn't justify it. Obviously if you needed something like a pair of boots, or the kids need clothes, thats different.

I think everyone on here comes from a different circumstance. I went to the sales and bought some kids clothes and in the next week I will be selling some old clothes on ebay.

Yes we have debt that Im reducing but it is now under control and my credit cards are reducing by about £500 a month.

I dont think you can tar everyone with the same brush. I dont think people should bury their heads in the sand and splurge out but in my case I worked out it was more sensible to get those clothes I needed now rather than wait for VAT hike and the sale to end.

  • Who said it is good for getting out of debt? It is a good time to be buying presents for the year ahead when they are massively reduced.
How do you know if the people shopping on the news are in debt or not?
Who are you to judge anyway?

Thing is OP most sensible people are not 'splurging' They are responding to the way things are going to go regarding VAT increases and the even tighter financial situation that most of us will find our selves in 2011..
They are buying while prices are low ..perhaps they are controlling their spending but have a more realistic view of how much extra things will cost in December 2011 than you do?

I've bought some great gifts in The Body Shop and Boots that I'll be using for birthday presents over the coming months. I'd budgeted to do this using money made from selling stuff online plus adding a small amount each month to a separate bank account.

It's meant that people will get some much better presents for the amount I'd allocate to them (if that makes sense) as well as saving myself a bit of cash too. For example, I got some gift sets in the Body Shop that were £34 reduced to £15.

I hate crowds, queuing and shopping - always have done even when money burnt a hole in my pocket - so have never "done the sales" to buy "that 'must-have' handbag" or "those shoes". (Having said that, I do love handbags by Radley and The Bridge ... I just enjoy the ones I have and no longer feel the need to go and buy yet another one!)

i havent spent a penny so far in these sales on clothes (mainly because i dont actually want anything at the moment) but in previous years i would stock up on decent clothes for work ie trousers, cardys tops, shoes which cut my total spending down on that stuff for the year

and anyway even if people are in debt then the sales may make their budgetted monies on clothes go further or they may reward themselfs buying labels in the sales that they may not buy during the year, i know i used to love the next sale coming round when i was in debt cos it was a shop i wouldnt buy from at any other times due to the prices
