This is a pretty good hard tail mountain bike from Halfords.
It's less than half price and there's 4% cashback at quidco.com.
For around £300 you get a bike worth £670.

There is no way that this bike was ever "worth" £670 for the spec it has. Shimano Alvio is pretty low end in the Shimano range.
But for around £300 it is a pretty good buy. I have had Carrera bikes in the past and they are good value.
They also have this for £200 which doesn't seem bad

I would never buy another bike from Halfords the last 2 Ive have have been utter rubbish.
Ive just spent £100 on repeairs to a bike ive bearly used in the last year and was in the last 1/2 price bike sale.
Plus the stores run by untained monkeys so far as I can see who now as much about bikes and cars as I do about Particle Physics....which is nothing btw
GOne day some company will do what they say they will do and charge a fair charge.:T
Not doing the opposite of that which they promise and charge you a fortune for the privileged.
Or maybe not:mad:0 -

Sorry, but I saw this on the Halfords website and decided not to post because its actually worth about £300 - its not a bad deal just not a great one. Decent fork for a bike of that price though.0 -

Cheap bikes are not a bargain, they will cost more in the long run as you keep repairing and replacing them. I'm not a fan of Halfords bike staff either but bought a Boardman Pro from them 6 months ago and so far it's been perfect. As long as you are buying a decent make with decent parts on it you should be fine.0 -
Seems reasonable to me.
I reckon that the bike is cheaper than the components on it would cost.
Rock Shox front fork.
Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.
Shimano Alvio components are alright. Just use them until the wear out and then replace with whatever you want.Happy chappy0 -
I've just taken a look round the internet at component prices.
Front forks are £130 on Winstanley cycles
everything else from Chain reaction cycles
Brakes - £100
Shifters/ brake levers £80
Derailleurs £33
Chain set £27
That comes to £374.
I've not priced up saddle, handlebars, wheels, tyres, chain, frame.
Still a good deal IMO.Happy chappy0 -

What exactly is your point here though?
Anything bought in bits will cost a lot more than the whole product build. Motorbikes in particular. Many brand new motor bikes never see the road but are broken down for parts .0 -
My point is that you couldn't buy half the parts to build the bike for what it costs.Happy chappy0

Been seriously considering this bike.... from all the forums I have read it seems to be a more than adequate "everyday" mountain bike with some very good components...
Also would like to buy my missus a 16" Ladies Carrera Kracken... but they cost £379 currently......
currently......
currently......
Hmmm now thats where the problems start with Halfords... their prices change almost by the day and they do some very crafty things.... such as increase the price for a week to then reduce them a week later (and show them as sale items)..... again internet forums confirm this... the cheapest confirmed price for the Kracken I have seen is from Halfords themselves (£341 back in August 2010).
My concern about buying from Halfords is that next week the bikes will be reduced massively from what I paid.0
