Claiming back tax

Hi
I just wondered if anyone has done this before, or if they know anything about this process of claiming back tax?
I became a full time student again in September this year and as I won't be working again until after the next tax year I filled in the form to claim back my tax from the wages I earnt from April to Septembet this year.
I have paid just under £700 in tax (not including NI contributions, which I can't claim back for can I?) and sent the form with my P45 through to my local tax office a few weeks ago.
Does anyone have any idea how long this process takes and when I am likely to get this money back??
Thanks in advance for any advice which can be offered.:T

NI cannot be claimed back but the tax can be.
Normally it takes just a couple of weeks for the cheque to come out, or at least it did when I did it once.
Alternatively you can normally just wait for the new tax year to start and then get it back automatically and you then dont have issues if you decide to get a Xmas job or weekend work during term time etcAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

about the NI..I think you can..it is calculated weekly and depends on how much you earned each week..if it is less than a certain amount..then you don't have to pay NI..but it all depends on your weekly or monthly pay..!!smile everyday...cos its free

Astaroth is right, you can't claim NI back. How much tax you pay is worked out according to what you earn throughout a tax year: NI is worked out and payable on a weekly / monthly basis. So, with NI, "once it's gone, it's gone", but with tax, you can get refunds.grade15 wrote:about the NI..I think you can..it is calculated weekly and depends on how much you earned each week..if it is less than a certain amount..then you don't have to pay NI..but it all depends on your weekly or monthly pay..!!Signature removed for peace of mind0
