    I guess it must completely undermine my blindingly self evident observation that a big average is made up from lots of little averages.

    Why not compare it to 1962. It will be more favourable for you.

    I'm surprised they consider Ellon, Balmedie stonehaven etc to be part of Aberdeen TBH. Aberdeenshre yes but not Aberdeen. Stonehaven is about 20 ish miles south isn't it?
