Shop won't exchange item

What happens if you buy something before xmas and when it's opened on the day it's not what it says on the box?
Someone I know bought an item, when it was opened on the big day, the box had obviously been bought before, the original taken from the box and replaced with a cheaper brand version then resealed. When my friend tried to return the item they won't accept it back.
What should she do?

Does your friend have proof of purchase?0

Yes, she has her reciept0

She can try and take it back and explain the situation to the shop but A tricky one to prove either way I would have thought, unless there is, somewhere in the shop, the "real" item0

She has attempted to take it back, they won't accept it, she paid £90 for it in good faith, but when it was opened it wasn't what it said on the box.0

I can't see an easy solution to this I am afraid.
Hope someone comes along to assist.0 -
Which shop is it?Gone ... or have I?0

Its actually me Ems talking about..I bought the DVD player from Currys, Somebody must of purchased this item before and returned it with another Toshiba DVD player inside, the one inside was dented and minus the remote control, underneath it said Cash Converters on it, so who ever did this was clever because the box was sealed and didn't look like it had been tampered with. I would of thought if it had been returned would the shop have record of it on there system? re; Bar Code
Thanks Em for starting this up for me x0 -
Ahhh Currys, perhaps the reason they wont exchange is because they dont like it coming off thier bonus. Last week I returned a sony vaio laptop as the mouse would be ok then all of a sudden it would get a mind of its own. Even though there was a fault with the laptop they said wouldnt refund it as the fault wasnt showing at the time. I said I was happy to wait until the fault showed itself, much to the annoyance of the manager but I got my refund in the end!0

unfortunately you will find it very hard to prove that you are not lying.
I can only suggest bombarding emails to people at Currys because generally someone that is not telling the truth will not pester as hard. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

Indeed. From Currys point of view they feel they will have sold the goods as described, the customer has now re-appeared with something else demanding a refund.
Not an easy thing for you to prove that they are wrong and you are right.
Emails and letters, as suggested above, are probably the only way forward.0
