Lentil question

I have a question I'm hoping someone can guide me on...

I make a lovely carrot soup and have decided to add some red lentils to it to make it more exciting (and better for me). However I blend the soup before I eat it, should I cook the lentils seperately and chuck them in post blending, or blend them with the soup (bit worried there's no point adding lentils if I'm just going to blend them! Also a bit worried they might go vile if I blend them!).

Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm rather a newbie when it comes to lentil cooking!

Thanks

Fritha :D

If you'r eusing split red lentils, you can cook them along with the carrots and then blend - they'll taste fine. You need to cook them until they're really nmushy though, about 30 mins, so if that isn't as long as you plan to cook the carrot bit, cook them separately and then add them before blending.

    Good luck, it sounds yummy!

Add them with the rest of the ingredients. Red lentils take about 20 minutes to cook and they disintegrate/go mushy (?) when cooked and so are ideal for adding to soups as they also help thicken the soup. It's green lentils that retain their shape when cooked.

You can do it either way. I add lentils to tomato soup and cook them separately and then blend or leave as they are according to how the mood takes me.

I'll be blending them then! That's great, thank you both for replying so fast!

Sarah, the carrot soup is yummy (goodness knows what it'll be like with lentils tho!) here's the recipe:

    4 large carrots
    1 large potato
    1 small onion
1 chicken or vegetable stock cube
(this evening I shall be adding 'some' red lentils )

    peel and chop everything
chuck it all in a pan with the stock cube and a pint of boiling water
    simmer for 30 minutes
    blend
eat (it'll prolly make enough for two or three!)

    Wish me luck!
