Guerilla Tree Planting

If everyone in Britain planted one tree.......

Tired of governments and pen pushing planners telling us what not to do.

Just do it.

What a fantastic idea!! I've already collected some acorns and sown them in pots. I've even got a patch of land earmarked for the oaks when they get a bit bigger.
Where I live, in South Gloucestershire, the council used to give away one free tree per household every year which I took full advantage of. You were supposed to put it somewhere that everyone could see and enjoy, (I think they meant in your front garden). Unfortunately I don't think they have that scheme any more.
I wish at least everyone would look after the trees in their own gardens. In my housing estate a lot of trees, that were planted by the developers, have died. Nobody bothered to water and look after them! I just can't understand why more people can't see the beauty and importance of trees.

I currently have around 20 trees growing...2 apple trees from last year are now in the garden (lets see how they fare over winter), and have a whole row of tubs of apple seeds and acorns in the house to get them growing well. Just have to wait until they get a little bigger now! Then...where to plant them? The gardens getting full, so will have to look out for places to plant them...any ideas?

On that subject, are there any particular plants that i can plant in my (small) garden that will suck up more CO2 than others? And why is it just trees that people talk about- because they are bigger than plants, therefore suck up more co2 than small plants?

I suppose i am just being thick, i'm sure it's common sense, but it's been a long day!

PS I am thinking of buying Holly bushes..any reason why i shouldn't?

    thanks all!

  • I am no expert but I would have thought that this depends on the size of tree and speed of growth. There is a website called fast growing trees where some can grow at a rate of 8 feet / year.

If you are going to plant in your garden you should first decide on size and position of the tree and then go and see the people in the know at the garden centre (or at least read the info labels on the saplings).

Probably because they didn't want to face all the subsidence claims from householders who had followed their advice.

It is, and it blocks a popup as it is, but the site uses nasty techniques to overlay other things also.
