NI contributions help please

i got a letter from revs & customs today informing me i have to pay them £311 by april 2011 as i havent paid enough ni contributions for the year 2004-2005 for my state retirement pension.

what the hell is all that about? i pay ni through my wages and im not self employed.

the letter states 'we are not asking you to pay' yet encvlosed a payment slip. im confused.

Its telling you that your contributions are short for the year in question, its giving you the opportunity to make a voluntary contribution so that the year can be used to calculate your pension, if you don't pay it then your pension when you come to claim it may not be the full amount. If you worked for the whole of the year in question and paid NI contributions then you would need to contac tyour payroll dept, hope that helps.

i called them. they said ignore it, they have a new computer system thats sending these letters out as its `13 months behind and doing things wrong.
