I've used various versions of Burning Studio for ages, its really good.

Turns out I got the email too, but I get say much junk about "offers" from them I'd not actually clicked that they were offering something for free.

I use their Burning Studio 2010 and take heart that so far I haven't received this email - does this mean that after many past failures to unsubscribe from their newsletter my last attempt actually worked?

That's something that I havent yet managed to do. I used their burning studio a couple of years ago and not long after registering the emails started coming through, luckily GMails spam blocker is quite good!

Ah - I did an email (not the freebie one though) and it's in spam - maybe I just got fed up and marked it as spam before or maybe so many others have that gmail did it for me.
