leave veg in water overnight?

This might seems like a silly question...but, I'm leaving my peeled potatoes in water overnight, but can I do the parsnips and carrots too?

We have our Christmas meal on Christmas Eve - could I parboil the potatoes and veg in the morning to save time later on?

Also, what is the best way to heat up slices of ham?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks :)

I peel the potatoes and carrots that way. But not the parsnips.

Too early for me, yes parboil and allow too cool but you are talking many hours.

Ps I cook Xmas morning , its not that hard or time consuming , I am not tied to the kitchen .

You really wouldnt be saving any time. just the actual turning on of the cooker.
You would be wasting electricity, you would have to heat the veg ie two or three pans) up on two separate occasions, one to parboil. then again to finish off so i cant see your reasoning.

Dont peel the parsnips till you need them, they will just go brown.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

To heat up the ham put it on an oven proof dish cover with foil and stick in a warm oven.

I would heat up ham as above, but add a little bit of water to stop it drying out, i keep my carrots and sprouts in bags in the fridge, and do my potatoes and carrots on the day.

you can peel your parsnips provididng that you put lemon juice or vinegar in the water to acidify it, this stops them going brown

i will prep all my veg tomorrow then all I've got to do is bang them on the heat on the big day

i parboil my potatoes for roasting and leave them in a cool place. i make my cauliflower cheese and stick it in the fridge

christmas morning all i do is put the meat into cook and the rest when needed

one thing I've found with leaving carrots in water is if you chop them into sticks, they tend to curve quite a bit. Still taste fine though, just something to consider if you're fussy about presentation!

We always do all the veg prep on Xmas eve afternoon - then in pans of water overnight
OH's work often prep all the veg the night before (sometimes two nights before if they have a quiet night unexpectedly)
Love is the answer. At least for most of the questions in my heart,
Like why are we here? And where do we go?And how come it's so hard?

If I am ever chopping veg I always do as much as I can face, then put it in the fridge. I do potatoes and put them in a plastic lidded container, sealed, full of water, same for carrots. For cauli/brocolli I just cut them and rinse them, then put a tiny sprinkling of water on them in a plastic lidded container and I usually find they'll keep for a week in the fridge like that.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. In the end I prepped the potatoes and carrots in advance and left the parsnips till nearer the time - I almost forgot the sprouts altogether! (no great shame as I can't stand them lol). The food was lovely and I'm looking forward to left-overs tomorrow :)

Have a great Christmas everyone and enjoy your day!!
