Allowances for tools etc

in Cutting tax
Years ago I was able to claim for tools (I'm an electrician) and got an annual allowance on my tax code. (I think it was around £90 per year).
I have written to my tax office requesting details of what other allowances are available: - on the basis that if I don't know it exists, I cannot claim it!
Regrettably, I have not received a response...
Any ideas on what is available?
Muchos Thanks

If you are employed, the expenses which are allowable are generally limited to:-
1.) Business travelling (not commuting)
2.) Professional subscriptions
3.) Flat rate allowances, like your £90 (see http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm)
4.) Anything else which is wholly, exclusively and necessarily paid for the purpose of your employmentI am an Accountant. If you are self employed then when you fill in your tax return you can deduct the cost of any tools you have purchased necessary for you to carry out your work. if you are employed shouldn't your employer be providing you with the tools required?MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year.
