Looking to buy a new Bed

Options
Before I start I would just like to request that this thread is not used as an excuse to bring up old arguments.

I and my partner are in need of a new bed and mattress. We dont mind spending whatever it costs but we want something that is good quality and will last a long time at a fair price.

We prefer hard wood styles, particularly traditional. Advice on different types of mattresses would also be appreciated.

I would like to get your recomendations of different brands and suppliers that you have had good experiences with and those you would avoid. I am leaning towards insore rather than online as I believe it is important to try out.

Many Thanks in advance

James

If you are leaning more towards in store, then your choice will be limited to the stores in the area that you are prepared to travel to. And this could limit your choice down to the big brands (depending on the stores in your area). Through my experience in the bed industry I have found that over recent years most of the big brands have lowered their quality (probably in order to cut costs). And I would seriously recommend going for smaller independent manufacturers, who still manufacture their beds by hand, and still take pride in their products, rather than an automated production line.

If you are going for a slatted bed, then unless you lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats, then most pocket sprung mattresses will be unsuitable.

Try and stay away from gimmicks like pillow tops, multiple layers of springs, and non turn mattresses (if it is pocket sprung).

Remember trying a bed out in a shop can only give you a very rough idea, and won't tell you what a mattress will be like to sleep on.
