Success (well, DH's success). We found the outlet, which had ice visible in it. With the help of a long screwdriver repeatedly dipped in boiling water, we loosened it at the outside, and then he also poured boiling water through from the inside. There was eventually a satisfying farty noise and a big lump of ice dropped at his feet.
