It depends what sort of spirits he likes really. If he drinks bourbons then it's pointless me recommending a malt whisky because the taste will be totally different.
Sainsbury's have Maker's Mark bourbon on special offer for £19.36. It won't be as smooth as the Single Barrel but it's over £16 cheaper and if he mixes it with anything it won't make a heap of difference anyway.

Tesco have Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack Tennessee whiskey for £20.

An alternative to bourbon could be cognac. It's a lot smoother than brandy, more flavoursome and it's a good mixer.
Sainsbury's have Courvoisier VSOP cognac for £19

For something slightly different Sainsbury's have Calvados, which is apple brandy from Normandy, on offer for £14.39.

And if none of those float your boat, have a look at the spirit listings on My Supermarket. They've got everything from Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda as well as Ocado which is the online equivalent of Waitrose.

I'd be inclined to buy him JD Gentleman Jack - it's a nice smooth taste. Definitely a class up from standard JD but cheaper than single barrel. It was recommended to us at the JD distillery 3 years back and has been my drink of choice since then. Of course being Scottish I like a good malt whisky but I actually prefer JD.
Gentleman Jack is also a nice bottle - classy look.NO FARMS = NO FOOD0 -
many thanks for the tips guys, i have never used that site before but they seem to have huge range. Will take a peek, also will see if i can spot the gentleman jack at local supermarket,
