bank accounts

Hi all ,
I went bankrupt in july of 2005 , after three years i was cleared .
I am basically wanting to know what to do to get a basic bank account again or even a debit card account , i dont want overdrafts etc as i have learnt my lesson , i applied for a royal bank of scotland account at the weekend and was told i needed a discharge of bankruptcy certificate , do i have to do this in the court i was bankrupted in or can i do it elsewhere as the trouble is now that i live in scotland and the issuing court was maidstone in kent ?? i dont know about the costs or anything to get the discharge notice or would i be wise to hang on for a year until it is wiped from my credit file ??
Just want serious answers please and not sarcastic ones as i have read a few on other posts which are a bit hard hitting , as i say i have learnt my lesson and want to build myself up again without obtaining credit etc , thanks in advance
Stu :)

  • co-op and barclays offer accounts to current BR, so discharged should be fine. RBS are a bunch of **untypables**!!

  • Hi Kentboy :)
If you applied to the court where you were made B/R I think there is a charge of approx £60.00? for a discharge certificate, however if you contact your O/R they may send you a letter out to state you are discharged. Thats what I did and it has helped me in cleaning my credit files up! It was free!! :)
On a bank account I use the basic co-op account and have done for 2 years, I still have internet banking and a basic card which I can use to shop online too, and is accepted at most retailers :)
    Hope this helps
    Take care

  • Hi,May i suggest a step account from natwest.I went B/R in 2005 and had a Co op a/c for one year until i got my discharge.I then applied for a step a/c and was accepted once i presented my discharge certificate.I have had this account for 5 years with no problems.Last year i applied for and was granted a foundation business a/c with a chq book as i am self employed.:D

    Good luck
