Mechanics claiming back tax on tools????

I'm a mechanic employed by a garage, over the past few years I have spent a lot of money on tools. I have heard that i can claim some tax back on the tools purchased by myself for use at work.
I know there are companies that do this on your behalf but they take a sizeable chunk of the return!
Is there a way i can submit this myself direct??
I have all my invoices for purchases of tools (over 6K worth!)

Any feedback would be great!
Regards - Nick
