How do I give bog standard supermarket mincemeat some Va Va Voom!

Options
Got to make some mince pies tomorrow, got a couple of jars of bog standard mincemeat in the cupboard. Any suggestions how to pep up this mincemeat to make my pies a little bit special:D

Thanks

You could add some nuts/cranberries/lemon or orange zest and a slug of brandy
  • From Nigella's website
1 jar of good quality mince meat
1 teaspoon finely grated fresh ginger
1 teaspoon finely grated orange peel
    3 tablespoons brandy

I tend to make different batches with added rum, amaretto almonds or cinnamon etc I think chopped almonds are my favourite addition.

I agree, along with some dried/fresh cranberries if you have them. I would add the extra ingredients tonight and let them marinade/ferment a little for extra flavour.

I used this mixture at the weekend as an alternative to apple crumble. With a crumble topping it went down a storm and very festive:)

I spotted some mincemeat with chocolate in somewhere and there seemed to be a lot of interest in it, so you could try adding grated chocolate to it

I like loads of glace cherries and brandy in my mincemeat

A good slug of sherry also works well

not much help for this year, but you can buy expensive luxury mincemeat for next Christmas in January for pennies. My favourite is Duerr's Luxury Mincemeat which is normally about £1.50 (or more!) and it keeps for years in the cupboard, or even opened in the fridge. Got a load for 9p per jar from Sainsburys last January which I'm using just now and it tastes lovely even though it was Best Before September 2010!
