Being a bit thick, but could you please tell me why it is so damn important to 'clean your credit file' and get a credit card?

Why? Surely you don't want to have more debt/credit in the future?

A healthy credit file impacts lots of areas of life not just consumer credit.;)

Rental properties and utilities/service providers being some. A healthy credit file also helps with better rates should the OP wish to apply for credit in the future -which is their right. A card such as the one the OP is looking at would help build a credit history and if used correctly would be very valuable.
