You have my every sympathy... I went thru this last night and today... Its on the Preparing for winter thread (post 3259) HERE .

I sorted mine with a fleece blanket that I poured boiling kettle water on and that, coupled with a bit of a thaw here today, my pipes are unblocked.

Its such a pain isn't it :( Hope you get it sorted soon

all these methods take time. It depends how much is frozen. If a lot of it is frozen you won't be able to defrost with heat, so keep going with the salt, make sure the shower doesn't drip anymore water into the drain, and it will eventually thaw. I think my basin took a day or so, as it was frozen outside to begin with - drips froze outside and gradually built up to block the pipe right into the basin!

A more comprehensive answers on the DIY section.

Pouring anything down the plug hole is a waste of time . Problem will be a blockage ( this week will be ice ) in the exterior pipe.

Brilliant idea. Also I urge all who have taps that drip , replace plug , dripping taps allow build up of ice in exterior pipes. Exterior pipes are not lagged because they are designed not to have stationary water .

You can have a very warm house ... but a frozen down pipe.
  • thanks everyone, I have had a butchers at the drainage and I reckon it the outside pipe but its too high up to do anything as its in the loft, I'm not shinning up ladders in this (or any!) weather so I reckon I'll have to try the patient route, many thanks it should get warm soon..... :)

We've always found a hairdryer, on top of a decorating extension pole if necessary for reach, works well. My parents used to use nightlights, in an open tin for safety, under the blocked pipe.

haven't read all posts so apols if already suggested.
