Old Catalogue Debt....apparently

Just when you think you're getting on top of things, and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel....something comes out of nowhere..
I received a letter about about a month ago from MKDP, stating that I owed £198 for an old Littlewoods account...
Its been so long since I had this account, that I barely remember even having it...
I phoned up MKDP and stated that I had no recollection of this debt, with it being so old, they confirmed the last activity on the account was 10 years ago...
I asked them to prove that I owed the debt, only because I was sure I had settled the account years ago, and that surely if I owed the money someone would have been in touch within 10 years? They mentioned that theyre not able to enforce the debt, but merely try to collect it.... I said I wasnt going to pay until they can prove there was a balance outstanding.
This morning, I have received a letter from HL Solictors saying that MKDP have instrycted them to collect the money, but where do I stand?
Noone has contacted me in 10 years, I wont have anything dating that far back to prove the balance is still outstanding, and MKDP didnt even bother to get back in touch to verify that the balance was owed...
If I owed it, then fair enough, but I genuinely thought it was settled, plus woth it being nearly 10 years, surely there has to be some sort of cut off point?

If its ten years old then dont even bother. They have admitted that they cant enforce the debt therefor they can't take any legal action against you. im sure someone with loads more knowledge will come along to tell you about statue barred debts shortly.0

Thanks, just seemed a bit cheeky that they'd send a letter from their solicitors, unless its scare tactics£4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
