Halifax outstanding overpayment help!

I used to work for Halifax Bank of Scotland and have since quit. My date of resignation was the 30th September 2010. I received a letter not long after my resignation stating that I was overpaid for the month of August 2010 by an amount of £1050.92 and by the time my basic salary, taxes, bonus were added or deducted I was left with an outstanding amount of £422.68. This is being disputed right now because they are telling me that some figures do not match up and are stating that this amount that I apparently owe is due to taking ONE WEEK's unpaid leave at the end of September 2010 before I resigned... They originally said it was one week's unpaid leave at the end of August 2010 which was corrected so already something has been miskeyed.
Anyway... Since this has been put in dispute I am not required to pay anything until I am given a final amount and complete breakdown of how it was calculated. I have earned £230.75 for my bonus and have been issued a pension refund of £135.69 since I resigned. Both of these amounts have gone towards the outstanding overpayment even though it is in dispute and I was told I didn't have to pay anything until it was finalised. Are they allowed to actually do this and is there anyway that I can claim this money back while the amount is being disputed?

My understand of it is, if they made an error and over paid you, they are within their rights to ask for it back, as the money was never rightfully yours.0
