Cheap cleanser for sensitive skin

Hi all,

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place so please feel free to move me :)

I have sensitive skin and have been using Simple soap to wash my face, but it's really been drying my skin. Simple do a cleanser but it's a bit pricey for a tiny bottle, so just wondered if anyone had any tips for a cleap cleanser for sensitive skin?

Any feedback would be much appreciated! :T

  • As you've had no replies, I'll move your question to the Health and Beauty Board :)

Does your face get very dirty? I don;t use anything on mine - I wash it every other day or so when I have a shower.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

  • I'd suggest trying the oil cleansing method - there's a mega thread about it on here :) I use it from time to time and find it pretty good, and I have rosacea and quite sensitive skin
  • Penelope - My skin is usually quite oily/large pores so gets dirty quite quickly and spotty :( So have to try and do something to resolve it.

Belfastgirl - Have you got a link to that thread please? :)

Get a cuppa before you start, it's long :)

Basic thing though is use some type of oil, rub into your face then steam or clean off with a warm damp muslin cloth. I use roughly half and half olive oil and castor oil but I think others do it a bit differently
  • I use baby wipes then moisturise. Works for me and I have blemish free skin apart from the odd cold sore.

I have sensitive skin and rosacea and I use the OCM at night, but not always every night. If I'm not using oil I just use a hot damp flannel. Since I've been doing this my skin has balanced out (used to get rather oily in places) and my large pores are definitely getting smaller and less noticeable. I don't think I've had a spot since I started OCM either, which is a miracle. I'll never put anything soap based on my face again!! I use 25% castor in olive oil. Too much castor can dry your skin out.

This cleanser is great for sensitive skin - and I always get it cheaply when Boots have the vouchers:

I have sensitive skin too, large pores and used to get loads of blackheads, pimples etc. I switched to a homemade version of the body shop's japanese washing grains (they no longer sell them). Just put aduki beans (can find them in sainsburys etc) in a coffee grinder until they are fine enough to shake through a wire seive, mix about a tablespoon with water until you get consistency equivalent to a regular exfoliating cream and then scrub your face with them and then I moisturise with jojoba oil.

If you're like me you're zoning out at the word oil with your skin but seriously it works, from what I understand jojoba oil is so similar to the natural sebum in your skin that it "tricks" your skin into not producing the excess oil. Also as someone mentioned above the oil cleansing works suprisingly well once or twice a week for a pick me up just stay away from the heavier oils like olive and almond as I find they really don't work with already oily skin but the castor oil is a must. I use half castor half camellia oil.

Don't know if that helps...was an essay in the end! Normally I wouldn't go on so much but I had terrible skin for years and I bought every product on the market I really wish I'd found out about the oils years ago, would have made my twenties much more fun!
(if you really want product I recommend l'occitaine rice range but it's nowhere near as good I find as what I use above)

OP, I have the same skin problems you report and I've recently started using Tesco's Vitamin E facial skincare range. I previously used Body Shop or St Ives stuff but have had to cut down on spending and I must say I'm actually really impressed with it so far and don't feel as though I need to go back to the more expensive stuff!
  • Body Shop vitamin C cleansing lotion works well for me - as do any of the vit c products
In my wealthier days I used Liz Earle!
