Trying to make my jumper bigger...

OK, I know this sounds like the un-do able but I have a jumper, mainly made from acrylic. I would like to make it bigger.
It sounds mad I know, but I do know that when I was a t school, we had jumpers that were 100% acrylic. Hard and shiny. We had this unsaid fashion thing at school (as well as the short fat ties, the leggings plus white socks, the shortened skirts and the BHS shirts over school-shop versions). We'd tumble dry the jumpers and they'd become more flexible and bigger.
Only problem is I can't remember exactly how!
Has anyone else done this either by mistake or found it happens to the clothes they have? how long do you tumble dry for? what temperature? fast or slow spin?
I don't have a tumble dryer, my mum does and I will be attempting this Christmas day (she doesn't know this yet). I got the jumper not in my size as it was the only one left and I got it for £5 insted of £35.
Any ideas would be much appreciated

I've found that it depends upon the actual type of acrylic as to whether or not it will lose it's shape and grow.
I'd go for regular temp in the dryer, and I don't recall having a spin speed on the dryer. I think it's more the heat in the dryer that does the work

When my ds was a baby, to get more wear from his knitted clothes my mum used to stretch them as she ironed them. They ended up being slightly thinner but lasted that bit longer, better a thinner cardi than an outgrown one.
Good luck, I hope you manage to get your bargain jumper to fit.0 -
Often the advice for washing/drying a jumper is to dry flat................so if you hang the jumper on a hanger to dry, it should lengthen/stretch it.
I always thought that tumble drying jumpers was likely to shrink them.10 Dec 2007 - Led Zeppelin - I was there. :j :cool2: I wear my 50 (gold/red/white) blood donations pin badge with pride. Give blood, save a life. 0 -
Thanks everyone- 5 days and counting! Will let you know how I get on! The jumper is so warm I 'had to have it'! Just was gutted it wasn't in my size- managed to haggle them down to a price I could afford so it remains one of those knee jerk reaction buys!! Its just the sleeves that don't fit so I could knit ends onto them (ex-textile student) but would be great if it was possible to enlarge it....hmmmm!0
