Lentils in the slow cooker

Options
Hi all

I'm planning on making a sausage and red lentil casserole. The lentils I have don't require soaking. Am I ok just adding the lentils unboiled at the start of cooking or would I be better boiling them first? The slow cooker will be on for about 5 hours I think, so is that length of time ok for them to cook?
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

  • I just add them in, straight from packet. Seems to work fine for me

I often add them straight from the packet but occasionally they stay a bit hard - think its usually when its a really tomato based dish though.

So I tend to soak them in kettle water just while I prepare the rest of the stuff and then drain and chuck them in.
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?

Well the lentils were like a soft nutty texture, which I didn't mind. On a whole though the dish wasn't that good. I put it on rather late and when I added something later, I didn't realise I'd not put the lid on properly so the onions weren't soft enough for my liking. I wouldn't mind, but I messed up putting the lid on properly about 4 times!!!! Mind on other things I think!

Will take your advice when I use them again for something more tomato based. The sausage casserole packet mix I used was a bit bland and watery, hence me adding things half way through.
