Home made crackle logs?

My uncle has an open fire, and has been using the occasional crackle log - the sort where you light the corner and it burns away for two or three hours. The cheapest I have found these is £1.79.
I am sure that there is more than just kindling in them, but I am not sure what.
http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1292759461757 is the sort of thing.
He has just had an op on his eye, the open fire is the main source of heat and the only source of hot water apart from a kettle. I was looking to make things easier for him as I can't get there.
Has anyone made their own version? Any hints or ideas would be welcome.

Well, not sure about the crackle logs but you can make most excellent kindling by stuffing loo roll inners with scrap paper, leaving a few bits sticking out both ends to light easily. I also used to stuff cereal boxes with a mix of scrunched newspaper and dry twigs etc that I'd pick up while out walking, and also any cheap BBQ charcoal I'd bought when it was heavily discounted at the end of summer. One of these used as a base, fire built up round it and loo rolls used as firestarters. It all helped.Val.0

I've had a search online and as far as I can see these logs are made of compressed sawdust. You would need access to hydraulic pressure to make them yourself, which I suppose is why you see more about homemade newspaper logs.
If you Google sawdust logs and your post code then you may find some cheaper ones, especially if you have a sawmill or similar business in your area that has decided to diversify in the way that this one has

You could also search on oak briquettes, sawdust briquettes http://www.burningblocks.co.uk/0 -
Thank you both for your really helpful posts.
I shall look into both. I really appreciate the links, Seakay, and perhaps I can get a delivery straight to my uncle which would really help him.
Thank you again.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
