I had a 2gb Magicstore for my camera it was the right version and had no end of problems, they are slow, wont always work. I got a replacment and same problem and ended getting a Pro compact flash card.

Subject of the thread is slightly confused. Going by the description provided, you get a 4GB microdrive (which is basically a compact flash card with a small 4GB hard disk inside) and a USB based compact flash card reader.

If you combine the two then it could be considered a pen drive - although it'll be fairly big compared to normal pen drives.

One thing to note about Microdrives... if you plan to use them in your compact flash based camera then be aware that they consume more power than normal memory cards so your batteries won't last as long.
  • And also note that the Magistor microdrives don't work reliably with a lot of modern Digital SLRs. Check for compatibility on the magistor website :)

I have a modern slr and it didnt work with mine, I checked Magictor before I ordered one.

I ahve also heard that they dont like the cold, or work in high altitudes.

I had a 1gb microdrive that I used in my digital camera, it died within the warranty period thankfully, because they're so useless, the place I bought it from replaced with a high speed compact flash card instead, much better.
  • still - looks ok for a 4gb drive you can carry around with you! £30?

I have one of these Microdrives, bought from Microdirect for about £24 a few weeks ago. Potential buyers beware, this Microdrive will not work in ANY camera. This is because it is not CF-II compatible, it only has an ATA/IDE interface (you can even see this written on the picture of the drive, on top of this page).

In fact, the only way the 4.0 gig version can be used, is WITH the "free" USB reader that is supplied. Putting the bare drive into the CF slot of a card reader does not enable it to be seen by the computer.

MagicStor make 2 different versions of this Microdrive. The 4.0 gig version (i.e., this one) is not compatible with CF-II interface, but the 4.4 gig version is.

I had a link which explained the difference between the 4.0 and 4.4 gig Microdrives, but lost it...
    :p happy-hoor :p

The magicstor ones are not known for reliability, To be honest I'd not recommend these to anyone wyho had to reliably move data, DVD-RW's would be a far better option assuming you have suitable drives each end.
  • Me and a friend bought one each of these and they are very dodgy! Sometimes work - sometimes don't. It takes a lot of messing around and trial and error just to get any computer to even recognise something is plugged in!!

IMO stay away - pay peanuts, get monkeys!!
