I want an Xbox 360 without kinect...

Hey all,

Am looking to get an Xbox for the kids this Chrimbo, but a little confused as to what to aim for... but I've compiled a list to help narrow things down a bit:

i) don't want the kinect
ii) have a 4GB hard drive memory already
iii) have wifi at home
iv) want black ops
v) want 1 or 2 other games, like the lego ones or harry potter (to please ages 7 and 10)
vi) want live membership for a year
vii) am willing to get second hand from recognised and trusted companies, however am concerned about the red ring- with this in mind, is there a particular model to aim for or avoid??

Many thanks!

Unfortunately, because they're trying to push the Kinect, all the bundle deals seem to be for that, which means you might have to buy seperately. The few non Kinect bundles don't seem to offer that great a value.

A 4GB Xbox can be had from TheHut for £140 and has wifi already installed.

Black Ops has gone back up to around £39 after the initial release day prices.

The Lego games start at around £8 for Lego Batman to upwards of £20+ for versions of Lego Star Wars.

For Xbox Live, Amazon have it for £29.97 at the moment. It used to be that you could get 1 month's free Live when you initially signed up. I don't know if this is still the case now though.

  • Thanks for that Phantom, I suppose it's worth buying seperately as you say, but did see I think at Tescos? a bundle with the 4GB and black ops, where it works out a whole £1 cheaper than buying together!

I'm assuming that having already got wifi and a 4GB hard drive to connect to it all, I can get any version of Xbox 360 inc arcade and the elite and some others, and still connect and save games ok?

I'm still wondering to go for a pre-owned one though... is it worth it?
  • Having yet another look round I found this deal:

PC world 4GB with lego harry potter and forza motorsport 3 for £149. I'm thinking this is a good deal, seeing as 4GB on it's own is £140+ ?

    Or pre-owned??? Hmmmmm

IMO that's a reasonably good deal from PC World. The RRP for the 4GB model is £149.99, Forza 3 is around £14 new and Lego Harry Potter around £18 new.

Just remember that if you go pre-owned non-slim model, it doesn't have the built in wifi. You'll be looking at £40+ for the wireless adapter.

When you say you already have a 4GB drive, are you talking about a USB stick?

Just to note that if you start downloading map packs, for Black Ops and other games, the 4 GB in the console and your 4GB may not last long. Downloadable game demos are themselves often around the 1GB mark. You could always buy a bigger USB stick though.

  • Cheers Phantom- I could be wrong on the ole hard drive, as the kiddies dad has one to give them. It could well be 20GB, but will take that on board with the game saving etc.

Thinking more about it the 4GB does sound a good option, and the PC world one even more so- Tescos 'bundle' with just the harry potter game is £155, and I can't find anything else that beats this. Think I will get it, (collection only though sadly, and am currently laid up with flu!) and buy BO and XBL on top.

My, the energy and effort that goes into Christmas shopping!

If it's a proper 360 hard drive that clips on to the side, then it'll probably be either 20GB or 60GB. There were bigger 120GB and 250GB drives also.
These old hard drives don't fit onto the newer slim models, though it is possible to open up the hard drive case, remove it and then put it inside the newer slim model. Whether you want to go about opening up a brand new slim 360 would be up to you though.

  • Ah that's raised a good point, I had no idea there was a specific hard drive for the Xbox and after reading your post have found out that it is indeed a 20GB Xbox hard drive one.

I think a visit to Game tomorrow might be in order to see what they have pre-owned and decide from there. Thanks for the heads up on this Phantom!

Hey supers, now hadn't thought of blockbusters, will give them a ring pronto!

I've dragged my sorry backside from shop to shop today to try and find a good deal. It appears game and gamestation have upped their priced on the ole pre-owned...

Game: arcade with one game= £119, however these games are 12+ and no good for my younger two (eldest only wants black ops). (do have the 20GB machine with one game for £140 odd I think it was)

Gamestation: arcade on own (with wires, control etc) = £99.

The latter a better option for me as I can then choose the game, even pre-owned for a better deal. Then black ops and XBL on top as planned.

I have found this extremely headbanging, and still don't have a straight choice as it's now between the arcade (where I can add the hard drive) but isn't really compatible with the kinect so I'm told...
Or the PC world offer, where I will have a 50 mile round trip to collect ! And the console only has a 4GB hard drive and won't accept the 20GB one (won't be pulling it apart Phantom!).

Kids will have a wii anyway so not bothered at all about the kinect, and the xbox is really to satisfy a teen who just wants to play black ops. Hmmmm, will see what BB can offer!

PS Popped into Morrisons and their offer is £170 for 4GB and 2 games. Their other offer which is sold out is with the kinect.
  • So. My 15 yr old tells me that it's an elite (120GB) or premium (60GB) he simply wants and almost cried when I mentioned both the arcade and 4GB versions!

So back to the drawing board. This is going to be tough as I need to keep my total cost to as under £200 as possible (console, XBlive (3 months is enough), black ops, Alan wake (for me ;0) and a lego type game). I found an elite on play.com for £90, but considering the delivery mess ups and what nots with weather, to ensure I have one for Christmas day I need to buy via the shops.

Game isn't doing this it appears at the mo, but the offers they have are bundles in the shop and they may just have a few odd consoles on their own at the back? Any suggestions where else might have some on the high street??
