Options
After weeks of pondering what she wants for christmas, my daughter has decided she would like an acoustic guitar, she's not really fussed if she gets this in time for xmas.
Can anyone recommend a decent one and where is best to buy from?

thanks.

  • Hi,

Firstly please buy one from a music or guitar shop where they can be set up properly and you can get quality after sales. Argos or similar cannot do this, you might as well be buying a kettle.

Playing an instrument can give you years of pleasure but having a mare of an instrument for a first start can put you off for life.

If she is young then you may want to try a 3/4 or 1/2 size guitar. Take her to a shop where she can get comfortable with the right size. They don't need to cost a lot, about £100 should get you something playable.

Chinese made guitars tend to be of lesser quality, Korean or Japanese are better, but your local music shop should be able to advise.

  • Excellent advice above about buying from a music shop rather than a catalogue / online etc, I've seen some very poor quality instruments that a decent music shop wouldn't have stocked but are sold via websites etc. They may be cheap but it's not a bargain if it doesn't work properly!

My 10 year old son decided the same. After a lot of searching I found a Music shop (Purple Turtle) in Pear Mill Industial estate Stockport. They have a wonderful selection of 1/2, 3/4 and full sized guitars. They knew what they were talking about and did not try to sell me the dearest in the shop. It was then tuned for me and I was shown how to do it myself. If you are near to them definately worth a visit. And no, I don't work for them!!
