Old Mobile Phone Debt - please help

With help of Money Saving Expert over the past few years I have become debt free - apart from the mortgage that is. But someone has thrown a spanner in the works!

I've been contacted by a debt collection agency on behalf of O2 who are claiming that I have an unpaid phone bill of £520 . According to them this was accrued over a period from March 2006 to January 2007.

First I heard from them regarding this account was approx Sep 09 and it has taken until this week for them to produce statements regarding this account.

Call me forgetful but I don't have any recollection of this account or debt ever existing. Why didn't they request it earlier?

Where do I stand on this? Please help because my blood pressure is going through the roof!!:(

Have you seen the statements? Did the phone belong to you?

Do you accept that you did have this phone? Did you have an 02 phone at that time? Have they provided documents that have reminded you it was yours? They need to prove you owe the debt, so start with working out if it is your debt.

  • Make then prove that the debt is yours before you come to any arrangements or offer any further information to them - also may be useful to get a copy of your credit file to see what is recorded on there.

I would go for the 'prove it' letter.
I know what you mean though, I hate talking to them on the phone, the stress you go through, and the way they treat you is enough to get anyone's blood boiling.

    Hope you get it sorted

  • I'd be interested to hear how you get on with this, I've recently had a bill from TMobile which sounds the same, it is only for £27 so nowhere near yours but it's the principle . I did have this mobile phone but I am 100% sure I paid the last bill, otherwise they would have chased me surely?!?
I called and asked for the evidence over 2 months ago and nothing yet!
Is there some kind of scam going on?

I would ask them to send you a copy of the initial contract, usually if you sign up in store you have to sign an agreement which they should have on file and if you did it online they should be able to send all the agreement details to your email address (as this is how you would have signed up) - if they can't do either of these things i'd say talk to trading standards as this can't be legit!
