Daft question - what's wrong with my cordless phone?

We have two cordless phones on our main landline. One upstairs, which works fine, on an extension socket. And one downstairs on the hall table, on the first incoming extension which doesn't.

It stopped working around 6 months ago and we assumed it was clapped out due to its agge and bought a new cordless one but still have the same problem.

Phone sits on its stand and lights are all on and it rings. When we pick it up , handset dislay says it is fully charged, but we cannot get a connection to thpe caller. Line goes dead. This was the same problem with the old phone.

We have tried a plain handset on the line and it works. So we know the line works. It is right next to the adjoining wall of next door. Could something be jamming it. There is a light on the top left which is orange and we think should be green. Also it makes a bleep periodically.

Anyone got any ideas at all on what might be causing it?
We have run out of ideas.

It is a Panasonic KX-TG6521E.

  • Your theory sounds plausible, that being some kind of electronic interference, the source of which is next door and which started 6 months ago.

One major culprit which springs to mind is christmas tree lights, but then people didn't have those running 6 months ago.

If you plug the cordless one into the other socket, does it work there - e.g. can you reach a point where you categorically know for sure that the problem is either something to do with the extension you are running it on or something very local to where it is sited?

I have now done a bit more digging on the internet and dredged up a user guide - they don't supply one with the phone you have to read it on line or download it. Anyway it seems there is an issue with Panasonic cordless home phones - they should be supplied with the handset synch'ed to the base unit but it is not always the case and then you have to reset it manually.

The instructions on how to do this took two pages in the user guide but when I tried to print them out I got an error message saying it was not compatible with Acrobat reader v 9.0......

It is a problem unique to Panasonic it seems. Maybe given other phone stopped working as well, some interference is also preventing this one from Synching. Can't rember the make of the earlier one, think it was BT.

Can't be the tree lights - predates them. Am about to swap it with the upstairs cordless model and see if it works up here.

My OH is all for taking it back to Currys and exchanging it for one that works out of the box.

I certainly got a paper instruction guide with my Panasonic Cordless phones, they worked straight out of the box, great phones, the best that I have ever owned.

Are you trying to use 2 base stations - normal setup would be only one connection to the phone line, then one or more extra handsets/chargers with no connection to the line.

I also got a full instruction book with my Panasonic cordless phone, who gave you or where did you get that information from?

I think it may be a problem unique to you as mine worked straight out of the box, are you trying to use two different makes of base station or to set the Panasonic up to the original phone base station?

The only " syncing " that I did was to load names and numbers in to the main handset, I then synced these to the other 2 handsets, which is a very useful additional feature of the Panasonics.
