Is there anything wrong with buying frozen meat and veg?

I buy frozen peas and sweetcorn, sweetcorn as its cheaper than canned or whole (1.99 for 4!) peas as buying them and shelling them mysel leads to peas which don't taste as nice or as fresh as frozen, though the pea pods make decent veg stock.
i go to a local farm for free range meat and stuff like mince and sausages (made there) are sold frozen, we put most of the meat we buy in the freezer as it means we just go once a month, spend £20 and generally get... 4 rib eye steaks, 2 500g bags of mince, 2 500g bags of stewing steak, 8 sausages, some diced lamb etc which amply lasts us for the month.0 -
now you've got the freezer look out for supermarket reductions on meat. stock up and shove them in the freezer until you want to cook them- we do this all the time, we rarely buy full price meat.
frozen veg is just as good as fresh. if you do buy fresh stuff and find it's starting to turn then chop it up and put it in the freezer to add to meals at a later date.
look out for the supermarket reducing fresh veg and chop and freeze this too - if it works out cheaper.
my mum loves lidl frozen mince (think it's steak mince and low in fat) you can cook it from frozen. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
I think Iceland's frozen sweetcorn is the best around. Lovely big kernels that don't mush in the microwave like Tesco's own brand do.
Must admit I only buy frozen sweetcorn and peas. Peas must be Birds Eye as I had a nasty incident with a slug in a bag of own brand ones (Sainsburys) once - and it put me off own brand peas for life!!:hello:0 -
i always buy frozen veg from iceland. i used fresh carrots, parsnips , swede etc. but i have found the best sweetcorn is iceland. and i always buy their peas.
iceland is so cheap, every few months i go and have a massive stock up. again like u , i love the fact of free home delivery.
i have bought their frozen mince before , but i don't really like it. i used tesco's as i prefer the taste.
but certainly don't feel bad u have no reason to.0 -
The only decent frozen peas out there are birds eye1 And value sweetcorn is a waste of money!
I don't eat meat but my dh & the 2 kiddies do. I generally stock up on reduced price fresh meat & freeze it. Or when the fresh meat is on offer. I cannot face going into a butcher, the smell makes me heave so unfortunatly my peeps do get supermarket meat. Ironic that my side of the family were a long line of butchers, lol!!!!0 -
Hi
We have a huge chest freezer too and is stocked to its limit ATM. We're very fortunate that OH can go shopping quite late and take advantage of all the yellow stickered items.
All of our meat is reduced and always pretty good quality normally the organic or free range or taste the difference range etc. I have bought beef, chicken, lamb and fish at silly prices for pennies. Our local Sainsburys is excellent-if you go about 9.30 they reduce everything to 10-25p and this has included full organic chickens before, super sausages, beef, lamb, soups...loads of stuff.
We also buy our milk from Makros when reduced at 5p a pint and freeze them...great idea, and saves a fortune!
We keep peas (petit pois), sweetcorn (supersweet) and mixed veg in the freezer for easy meals. Also corn on the cob...yummy and if you steam them you cant tell the difference:D
Personally like fresh veg but only buy if in season and cheap or heavily reduced and yellow labelled.
Bought some fresh cod the over month for 15p and we cooked it last week and it made a large fish pie making 10 portions;)

Most "fresh" veg on supermarket & greengrocers shelves is shipped from outside the UK, this has a clear impact on its vitamin content, the longer its off the plant or stoppesd growing IYSWIM, the vitamins reduce daily.
Frozen veg is usually frozen within a day, 2 days of picking, so as a rule it has a clear advantage over most of the stuff in the "fresh" veg aisle of your supermarket.
I buy corn cobs, sweetcorn, peas. i did see now birds eye are doing "soya beans" in the frozen bveg section- anyone tried those? I dont like cauli or broc so we dont bother with those.
I dont buy frozen meat- but buy meat then freeze it, in saying that, I wondr whether the same rules of transport apply to meat??? I think it birds weye who have an ad running about the freshness of its fish, its frozen straight away, again in contrast to " fresh" fish, which I know from working in tescos would be sat in a cold store for at least 4 days before it gets to shelf. An that doesnt count the transporting or packing before it gets to store. Id anitipate that the fish would have been dead at least 4 days before it gets to plate. We pretty much always buy frozen fish for this reason.
I often buy frozen vegetarian versions of meat, for example linda mccartney pies & susage rolls, or mexican bean burgers which farmfoods also do really cheap
i dont think its cheating at all. Saves waste, and can be significantly better for you vitamins wise! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
susiesaver wrote:Apparently frozen veg can be as good for us if not better than fresh. Frozen veg that has been picked and frozen quickly retains its vitamins. This can be better than veg which may have been languishing in the fridge for several days.
Not to mention the time spent in the cold store before it even gets to the supermarket, then the several days under vitamin-destroying fluorescent lights. Personally, if I can't buy veg from a farm shop or market, then I'd generally rather buy frozen.0 -
Farmfoods does have some bargains! Their prepared Calamari is cheaper than whole squid another good one is frozen peppers - I cannot get near to their price especially when you consider that they are pre chopped, seeded and cored. The petit pois are very nice too.The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0
