Hi,
Over the last six months i have paid £30 a month for my TV Licence, then in Jan my payment reduces to 12, this means i have paid for a full year but then in Jan will start to pay for another year.
Does this mean the TV Licence people owe me a refund?

No. When you start paying monthly (by DD) you pay for the first year in 6 months.
Then you start paying for the next licence 6 months in advance. So you pay for it 6 months in advance - they send the licence - and you pay the last 6 months in arrears. As they don't charge you for credit ..... they make it interest neutral by spanning the due dateIf you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
So basically i'm always paid up to six months in advance?0

if you pay in one go you pay a year in advance so on average you have paid six months in advance
on the monthly scheme you are paying six month in advance too.0 -
I queried this with them as have done mine recently. In Jan i will start paying the £12 too, i said if we move out in July what happens - she said we will get a refund of the 6 months.

Normally when you move, you would simply transfer the TV licence to the new address and continue with the same payments, in which case no refund would be needed. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

but there is no reason for them to owe you a refund any way, why should they sit with 6 months of everyone who has a licence (which is a lot) money in there bank making them interest?0 -
It is the same with car tax, you pay up front for either 6 or 12 months. That is how the system works. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

If you pay by the year the whole year is paid for in advance (in most cases refunds are only given for complete 3 month unexpired periods)0 -

For the same reason they give you the licence at the half way point and then - for the next 6 months they're giving you free credit!
So you're 6 months in advance - 6 months in arrear ......... so it's interest neutral. As my first post.
From the TV Licensing site :You'll usually pay for your first licence within six months, in instalments of around £24 per month. (If we have to spread the cost into four or five monthly instalments, the cost may be slightly higher). From then on, you pay for your licences in 12 monthly instalments of just over £12 - six before your licence is due and six after.
Just one of the ways to help make paying more convenient at no extra cost.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0
