  • The Ken Hom Tao woks look good ( see amazon) or shop around for Stellar or Circulon. My wok is a Green Pan one but was picked up cheap in TKMaxx and has no lid.

    £50 for a wok!!!

the best woks for serious cooking are the cheapo ones from Asian or Chinese grocers/supermarkets, under £10
    must be some on-line

if you buy non-stick/stainles steel/cast iron you'll get a fancier & more expensive product which will be fine for a casual cook, but won't produce such good results

I guess it'll depend on what you're/they're aiming to do with it :A
  • I'd very much agree with the above post, think \i paid less than £5 for my current one from a Chinese supermarket. Watch out for flat or round bottom as a round bottom one wont sit on an electric hob.
If you live far from anywhere that stocks Chinese produce maybe try Wing Yip online or ebay. Spend the other £45 on noodles, sesame oil, mushrooms etc.

The cheap ones from Chinese supermarkets are the best and usually under 10-15 quid. NEVER dishwash a wok and it will last for years! :)

  • Yup, i agree with going for the cheap ones. Remember you should prime them first by burning oil in them. I bought a coated one first but it only lasted a year before the non-stick stuff started to flake off in the food. yuck!
  • We had an Ikea wok and threw it out within a month, it was absolutely horrible.
We have then purchased a Ready, Steady, Cook one for about a tenner and are very happy with it though, reading the previous posts, a Chinese shop wok sounds like a really good idea.

  • thank you for all your help

as i said its not for me , the m-i-l asked for it .
we normally spend around the 50 mark so thats why i said i could spend that amount.

i dont have any chinese shops around me ( well i dont think so , ill have to go and have a look around )

ive got a tesco , asda and an argos . miles away from the nearest ikea so thats not an option either.

ill take a trip into town tomorrow and have a look to see what they have . now i have to get im thinking brain on and see what
else i can get for them :)

    thanks all again x

Buy a wok from Chinese shop, make sure you clean it thoroughly (brillo pad) to remove any residue from manufacture, then season it using peanut oil.Use the rest of the £££ on other gear from a chinese shop, and you can buy a wok stand to use a round bottom wok on a hob although a hob doesnt really get hot enough for my liking.
If your not near a chinese shop try asking if your local takeaway will get you one.
