Unless the OP moved in before 16 November 2010 and the bill was issued before this date then the council have already provided more instalments then they are required to so they may not be willing to allow more instalments however if they do so then they can discretionaly allow payments to be made up to and including March 2011.
For a bill issued between 17 October 2010 and 16 November 2010 the statutory billing scheme allows for 1 payment on 1 Dec 2010 and 1 payment on 1 Jan 2011.
For a bill issued after 16 November 2010 the statutory billing scheme allows for 1 payment on 1 Jan 2011.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
It looks like your council tax is the problem bill. It's £214 due to the way they calculate it assuming you moved in 1st Dec you would need to pay for 4 months at £111 but from that date. As you have missed that and as March is skipped then the £444 is split into 2 payments and it works out at £214 per month but only for Jan and Feb. The council actually do understand that this calculation can cause hardship and will usually allow to to spread it over a bit longer. You need to call them and offer at least what the bill is normally i.e the £111 plus a bit more to cover the arrears so far.
isn;t there a reduction you can get on council tax if you are on JSA (boyfriend gets disregarded as an occupier so the single counted occupier can claim the 25% single occupier discount in the meantime...... but NOT if the boyfriend hasn't registered for JSA yet and i'm not sure they'll backdate)0 -
Quite correct, they won't backdate, but as soon as he signs on you'll get single occupier discount. As well as his benefits. Given, like you said, you'll be incurring an enormous amount of charges daily if this continues, he needs to sign on today. That's what JSA is there for. Given that he's not contributing to any of the bills and rent, it's the least he can do.
I've always found our council very flexible with repayments when moving in/out of places. Call them and see what they can offer you.DEBT FREE 3rd Sept 2011

I'm in the same situation with the council tax, and have been told by my local council they cant make an arrangement until after its due,, so I'm supposed to pay £187 by 1st Jan and £187 by 1st feb, which I can't! ring them and explain you cant pay, I've been told they've put a note of the call on my file and to ring in on the 7th (when I can pay £125) pay that and make an arrangement to pay two more £125's on 7th feb and 7th march, apparently they can only do that if you are late paying? Sounds ridiculous to me but if your council are the same its worth ringing them? as long as its paid by the 31st March,
it does seem a bit crazy that there are such big penalties if you dont pay and its a priority debt yet they arent really able/prepared to help until you have already gone into arrears...
With your debts -
Is there anyway you can pay the txtloan off? the charges on that are insane, and from experience, payday loan companies are horrific at dealing with it if you can't repay,
write to cap one - tell them you are having problems and need to arrange a reduced payment on your account, say that you will make a token payment of £5 or even £1 while you arrange this,
Go in and talk to Lloyds, see if they can temporarily increase your od limit so you dont get charged (I banked with Lloyds and regard them as pure evil however friends of mine were in same situation as me and the bank manager bent over backwards to help them) take in your bills etc and see if they will refund your charges to put you back in a better position, they might not but its worth a try, if they really wont help, go to any one of the other banks, open up a basic account and get your pay in there, pay your bills from it too, that way you wont have Lloyds decide to take all your money off you, You can then make sure your priority debts are paid (Household bills, food = priority, debts to banks = not priority). If you go down this route you can then negotiate a repayment plan with Lloyds, your credit file will suffer, but you said its bad anyway?
the same goes for water company, ring them and explain your boyf is recently unemployed,
You really need to do a full statement of affairs, the budget brain website is great cos it takes everything into account, once you've done that you can really work out how much you have left, Also keep reading on here, I'm sure there will be many more helpful people along soon, when my debts really became an enormous problem I did most of the above and talked to consumer credit counselling service,
What you do really depends on how long you think this will last? if its temporary and you can go back to splitting the bills within a month or so then just contact everyone for temp reduced payment, but if not its prob best to start really looking at your money and talking to one of the debt charities!
hope this helps! Total debt - £7500 Dec 2010debt free date - feb 20160 -
forgot to say if you cant pay the txtloan off, then you need to stop your bank card immediately, tell the bank its been stolen, in fact sometimes the only way is to change bank accs as apparently payments can still be taken from a stopped card! Then once you have stopped the payments write to txtloan explaining you cant pay and need to arrange repayment schedule, it wont be easy but they should eventually accept! When you do arrange repayments do not give them your card details, ask for thier acc and sort code and transfer the money yourself, or they can take as much as they want when they want off your acc!
Sorry don't mean to scare you with this, but I've had some nasty experiences with payday loan companies and I wish I had known that they can still take money from a stopped card and that they can take as much as they like when they like before I'd started my repayments! Total debt - £7500 Dec 2010debt free date - feb 20160
