Council Tax query

Options
Not sure if this query should be in this section.

I currently live in South Wales and have my own house.

I'm due to start a new job in a different part of the country after Christmas.

Initially I will be moving in with my parents until I am able to sell my home.

As my home will be unoccupied (I will go back at least once per month to check on things) where do I stand with regard to Council Tax?

I have phoned my local council and was on hold for almost 30 minutes before being told that they didn't know the answer!

unless you strip every piece of furniture from it and it thus becomes genuinely "unfurnished" you will remain liable for full CT (or 25% discount if there is only one of you) because it will continue to be classed as your main home even if you are living with your parents

if it is unfurnished you can claim a 6 month exmept period but beware that the council will send someone round to insopect the property for themselves to confirm its status (and probably ask the neighbours when was the last time they saw Mr X or anyone else living there)

An unoccpied and substantially unfurnished property is exempt (class C ) for a max of 6 months after which a charge of between 100% and 50% is due (depending on the local authority).

An unoccupied and furnished property is charged at between 50% and 90% of the full charge (depending on the local authority).
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
