Boxing day buffet

This year we're having family over for a boxing day buffet. Apart from the usual things like cocktail sausages and sausage rolls, what things would you recommend and from which store? (Preferably freezable).

I don't want to make anything!

  • Not very OS if you're going to buy everything :)

I like the duck spring rolls that you can get in all the supermarkets for £1 a box.

You don't want to make anything? Well, Lidl do some nice posh vegetable crisps and their crusti croc crisps, cheese twists and bread sticks are good. Lots of good dips, hummus, taziki*sp* etc Extremely cheap fizzy pop, cakes and posh cheeses as well. They have some of those iceland-esque frozen party foods in for xmas too.
I'd do a gammon joint, it's not that much effort and you'll get loads of meat for much cheper than buying cold cuts.

Don't know where else to put the thread. Too much going on this Christmas to make a buffet on Boxing evening

As for the duck spring rolls, which supermarket brand did you find the best?

tesco.. mini pizzas or the big value ones cut into 8, tub of pasta salad or 3 depending on numbers, oven chips.. thin and crispy and a tub of chip spice. Cook a joint of meat in a SC or slowly in oven and slice thiny (or delegate to a guest), boiled eggs, bread rolls and a tub of fake butter you can leave out so people can make their own sarnies of sliced meat, pre-grated cheese.. bowl od saled/crisps/nibbles. Cheese and crackers, choc mini rolls/mince pies/jam tarts etc

I am descended on on the 26th as well.. it is also my birthday so we have cake too!!! As such I refuse to cook so do pretty much the above.. last yr I had a delivery from Mr T in the morning to fresh stuff was fresh!

    Hi pretani,

I would go for leftover meats (turkey ham etc) with lots of salads, coleslaw, pickles etc. Plenty of garlic bread to pad it out, vol-au-vents, sausage rolls etc. Put out a cheese board with crackers and fruit and serve mince pies and Chrstmas cake afterwards.

You should get more ideas on these threads:

Edit, as I've just read up that you don't want to actually make anything, I'll move this to the grocery shopping board later to see if you can get recommendations for the best places to buy party food.

we have a baked rather than boiled ham for the festive season, that's usually one of the stars for BD buffet. I have been a bit disorganised this year so plan to augment this (traditional meal here, though for the first time might just be dh and I so leftovers rather than buffet ;)) with bought pickled onions and beetroot. HM coleslaw...which you could buy , turkey curry w/coconut (some sort of turkey curry is mandatory surely, we have it even when we haven't had turkey on the day!) but you could buy a curry sauce, for some reason I do game chips often. potato salad. Pate/toast and a fruit pavlova, you could buy a meringue nest? I find people still want sweet but need fresh too...or a fruit salad.

Thats key really, you want fresh food, salads etc, but not too healthy,a green salad rarely gets touched, lentil, bean or wadorf salads get hoovered IME.
