Hamper covering - help needed!

Hi All,

I'm attempting my first hamper for a friend's 30th birthday, a few of us are clubbing together for a 'Champneys and Champagne' hamper. Got a bottle of champagne, 2 champagne flutes, champagne truffles and various Champneys toiletries :)

I've bought an oval water hyacinth basket (48x35x26cm) which is lined with a pretty floral fabric, figured she can use it again for something.

The problem I have is how to cover it once i've put the bits in! Do I use cellophane and gather it up round the basket and tie it with bows at the top? Or do i use cellophane but secure the joins underneath? Does anyone have any other ideas?!

Many thanks

Sounds like you have a fairly huge basket. You may need to tape two pieces of cellophane together so you can sit your hamper in the middle and gather front to back to start, then bring up the sides. Once you have tied with a bit of curly ribbon, you can alter your creases and I always cut some from the top to make it even after I have tied the gather.
  • Thanks for the replies, loving the bag idea, seems the easiest way, just need to see if i can find a plain one to fit! If i can't and have to use some off a roll, where's the best place to get some from? Will a florist sell me a couple of strips?
  • I got a roll off ebay but a florist should be able to sell you some strips. I think places like Hobbycraft and Paperchase sell them too.
  • I have put together a few baby hampers for colleagues in the past and I have always taken my hampers to our local florist. They wrap them in cellophane and and tie on a nice big bow and it finishes the hamper off wonderfully. They only charge me around £2.50 so it might be worth popping into you local florist and ask them as they always have plenty of different colours and paterns of cellophane to choose from.

You can do whichever you prefer - it might be nice to tape it at the bottom so she can see all the different components. However it is, in my experience, a LOT harder to tape like that unless you've got a million hands! :rotfl:

You can also buy shrinkable cellophane bags. It's just a matter of finding one from a retail supplier big enough :undecided I'm sitting looking at the wholesaler, but unless you want 50 super massive jumbo bags, it won't be much use to you :rotfl:

Topped off with a pretty little raffia bow and I think it would look stunning! :D

You can buy a roll (or a cut piece) of cellophane from amazon, ebay, hobbycraft or go to your local florist.
  • Thanks for the replies. My search for a big enough bag has been unsuccessful unless like you say I want to bulk buy 50!

I might ask a few florists if they can wrap it for me :) if not will give it a go myself with cellophane. Will see how it goes :D
