Christmas Presents for 8-10 year old girls

What have people been buying their daughters for Christmas this year? I have 2 step daughters and we still have to buy their main presents and a few extras.
I've been asking my husband for months and I'm finally taking it in my own hands to sort them out. I'm running out of time Thanks!
How well do you get on with the girls, can you ask them what they would like? Better to get something they would really like than some thing that might be suitable.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
My girls are almost 6, 14 and 17. They all love arts and crafts and cooking since they were knee high to a grasshopper. What are your step daughters into?0

Thanks everyone. I get on well with the girls and we have asked them, but further conversations with mum and we have been told they have everything off their lists, when my husband asked for suggestions he got told one would like an iPhone and the other an iPod Touch (we're not sure if this was a joke) We cannot afford anything like that, our own son won't be having that much spent on him.
They have DSs, a Wii, music players. I did think of a digital camera but not sure if they are now getting one and uncertain whether to ask. They don't play with dolls and they have enough craft stuff here and at their mum's to open their own Hobbycraft. We buy them stuff and never see it again and it's never spoken of or we get told it's broken. We searched high and low last year for a game and come Christmas they looked bewildered and it never got opened! Still sitting here gathering dust.
I'm thinking a few Hello Kitty accessories and some money.,___,

How about some books, or clothes?
My family always buy my children clothes rather than toys at christmas. That way it saves me a fortune (as mum goes overboard!), and they don't get too many toys.0 -
I like the idea of clothes when unsure what else to get, little girls love going out and picking clothes that they like also so maybe some vouchers and an iou shopping day where they get to spend the vouchers on the things they want with you and your husband0

Blue WKD's are always popular with the kids.I wonder why it is, that young men are always cautioned against bad girls. Anyone can handle a bad girl. It's the good girls men should be warned against.-David Niven0
