Pudding rice.

Do the supermarkets still sell pudding rice? I couldn't find any last time I was in Tescos.
What makes pudding rice different from normal rice?

I have bought it recently, but do not shop in Tesco. It is probably not with other rice, but with other dessert things like custard powder.

It is short grain rice and I believe it has better absorption qualities, in the same way that arborio rice does for rissoto. arborio is also a short grain rice.

Yes I think it was in Sainsburys whnen I last got some. It's short grain rice which goes sticky when cooked. Most long grain rices have grains that keep more separate when cooked.

Tescos do sell it, and in our local branch it's next to the tinned rice pudding.

Yeah you can, to make things more compllicated for you tom ;) pudding rice, and FLAKED pudding rice. LEss than 50p a bag.

I use flaked I think its 1p cheaper ;) and its great. For a really luxurious version chuck in a bit of evaporated milk if you have it in.

    Perfect for rainy days.

i think the difference is the shape of the grain and the level of starch in it, as it holds shape in a completely different way to basmati or other long grains, as its a shorter grain. Other than that the difference is its way cheaper adn there doesnt seeem to be a shortage of it on the shelves- yet!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

It's with the other rice in Asda but I buy the bigger bags that are with the Asian/Carribean food. It's much cheaper.

  • Homemade rice pudding is best with nutmeg sprinkled on it before it is cooked. It forms a lovely skin on top. Beautiful!!!
