Carpet cleaning in Belfast

Hi everyone

First post, go easy on me. :) So I've a baby on the way (little girl, due to arrive in the next month or so) and I'm trying to make the place as clean as possible for when she's born, but I've noticed how grubby my carpets are (used to be a bit of a party flat - no longer) and I can't for the life of me get the dirt out of them. Cleaning it with carpet shampoos doesn't seem to be working despite the elbow grease - it definitely smells nicer, but the dirt is still there.

It looks like the only option is to bite the bullet and get someone in to clean it properly, but there are so many (a quick Google showed me a list as long as my arm) and I've no idea what a reasonable price is for a proper carpet clean. Would anyone have any idea how much roughly this kind of thing should be or even be able to recommend someone who's done a decent job in the past? I'd be really grateful for any help you could offer, I just haven't a clue and my arms are killing me from all the scrubbing...

Thanks! :)

  • You thought about buying a carpet washing machine ( vax etc ) - with a baby coming, trust me, you will be needing one. Initial outlay for a machine might be more but might pay for itself in the long run.

    Is it dirt or stains?????

if it just ground in dirt then go to a hire shop like HSS and hire a cleaner for 24 hrs and work away. Stains and you may well have to get a professional in.

Buying your own carpet cleaner once your carpet is clean is a good idea. The bissells , although pretty expensive compared to vax do get very good reviews and I find mine quick, easy and effective

It's both. Hoovering has taken up a good bit of the mess, but the worst bit of carpet is the route between the hall and the bathroom, probably full of ground in dirt, and to be fair there have been a lot of drinks spilled on that carpet so it really needs a deep clean.

So you reckon buying a carpet cleaning machine would work out cheaper than hiring a professional? Would it get the carpet as clean? And is there a difference between a cleaner and a steamer? Sorry for all the questions, but you've got me thinking - I'm on Amazon now looking through the results for 'carpet cleaner'!

    Thanks for your replies! :)
  • I'm going to go against the advice of the others and say get someone in to do it. They'll probably do it better and faster than you could yourself (they've experience and industrial machines), and whether heavily pregnant or the parent of a baby, you aren't likely to have either the time or the energy for doing it yourself. I would say that you should definitely get a professional in this time, even if you look into getting a machine for doing it yourself later on.

We had a guy come and do two sofas and a large living-room rug for us about two years ago, and were really pleased with the job he did (and the cost was reasonable too). I'll see if I can dig out his name and number if you're interested.

A machine you buy yourself will not ever be powerful enough to get a filthy carpet clean. They are great at keeping a clean carpet clean but theres not one that will cope with what you are talking about.

The reason I suggested the HSS hire one is pure MSE. The machines from there are very good, much better then those you hire from say B+Q but once again any machine you use yourself is only good to a point

If the carpet really is that bad then in this case getting a couple of companies in to quote you wont be a bad thing

I have used professionals in the past with very mixed results, now I do my own every couple of months

    @Blueberrypie

If you have the number of someone you could recommend for a few carpets and maybe a sofa I'd be really grateful. We were considering renting a Rug Doctor from B&Q, but like you say, there just isn't the time right now what with last minute preparations and everything else at the moment.

Thanks again everyone for taking the time to reply, all the suggestions have been really helpful!

I had carpets and sofas cleaned by 'the Cleaning Doctor'. I'm out in the sticks, so I can't recommend the actual man that I used, because they work on some sort of franchise system, and they cover different post code areas, but they have a big ad in the Yellow Pages, and I'm guessing that they should all do a similar type job. He worked really quickly, charged a reasonable price and the results were far better than when I hired a machine and tried to do it myself.

I haven't a note of the name or number of the guy we used, and I didn't write him a cheque so that's no help...but I'm pretty sure it was Jim Oakes, phone number 9002 5990.

Good luck with your carpet-cleaning and your new baby :-)

Honestly if I were you I would rent out a rugdoctor (from B&Q or homebase) and do it yourself. Fantastic job TBH. Cheaper too and you can do all the carpets. I gave it a go in september and couldn't say a bad word about it.
