Bank sent personal docs to wrong address

Options
Hi,

We are currently in the process of buying a new house and have got our mortgage approved and are just waiting to exchange.

We sent our original marrige certificate, payslips and bank statements to our bank and having not received them back chased this up. It turns out they were sent back to us in September but sent to the wrong address!

I'm astonished that they have managed to do this being that our current mortgage is with them and they obviously have sent other docs to our current address in the past. I've raised an official complaint but wondered whether I should be expecting some sort of compensation for this aqnd if so what should I be going for?

As well as the setimental value of our marriage certifiacte it's also very worrying that somebody else has received all the other info.

Thanks for any advice.

I would estimate they will cover the cost of replacement and offer a goodwill payment in the range O4U says above.

I would also be looking for some kind of ID theft cover from them, including subscription to credit checking monthly.

Sensitive information has been disclosed. Would be much worse if Driving Licences and Passports had been included.

  • Name and shame too please!
    Thinking critically since 1996....
  • I remember an insurance company being taken to the Financial Ombudsman Service after losing a marriage certificate some years ago.

As I remember, they had to pay for a replacement plus £250 for the distress caused. You might get rather more now.
